Understanding AdBlue & DEF Systems

AdBlue (known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF in some markets) is a urea-based solution used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines. It has its own separate tank, filler cap, and delivery system — entirely independent of the diesel fuel system. Problems arise when AdBlue is accidentally added to the diesel tank, diesel is added to the AdBlue tank, or the AdBlue fluid itself becomes contaminated.

AdBlue in the Diesel Tank

This is the most serious form of AdBlue contamination. AdBlue is highly corrosive to many of the metals and seals used in diesel fuel systems. When added to the diesel tank, it begins to crystallise and react with fuel system components almost immediately. The urea solution can damage fuel injectors, the high-pressure fuel pump, fuel lines, and the fuel rail — all of which are precision-engineered and expensive to replace.

If you realise you've put AdBlue in your diesel tank, do not start the engine under any circumstances. Even turning the ignition to the accessory position can activate the fuel pump and begin circulating the contaminated mixture. Call us immediately — the faster we respond, the greater the chance of avoiding catastrophic component failure.

The Cost of Delay

AdBlue contamination of a diesel fuel system is time-critical. The crystalline deposits that form as the AdBlue reacts with metal surfaces can seize injectors, block narrow passages, and score pump internals within hours. Vehicles treated promptly — before the engine is started — can often be saved with a drain and flush. Those driven on a contaminated mixture may require injector replacement, pump replacement, or even a new fuel rail, with costs running into thousands.

Diesel in the AdBlue Tank

Adding diesel to the AdBlue tank is less immediately destructive but still requires attention. Diesel fuel will damage the SCR system components — the AdBlue pump, dosing valve, and catalyst — and trigger warning lights and limp mode. The vehicle will typically continue to run on diesel, but the emissions system will be inoperative until the AdBlue tank is drained and the system is flushed.

Contaminated AdBlue Fluid

AdBlue has a limited shelf life and is sensitive to contamination. Exposure to direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, or storage in non-approved containers can degrade the solution. Using contaminated or out-of-specification AdBlue can block the SCR injector, damage the catalyst, and trigger persistent warning lights. We can drain and flush the AdBlue system and replace it with fresh, certified fluid.

Our SCR System Repair Process

Our technicians are trained in the specific requirements of SCR systems across all major vehicle manufacturers. For AdBlue-in-diesel incidents, we perform a complete fuel system drain, flush, and filter replacement, followed by a thorough inspection for crystalline deposits and corrosion. For diesel-in-AdBlue situations, we drain the AdBlue tank, flush the SCR delivery system, and refill with fresh AdBlue.

In both cases, we use manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment to clear fault codes, reset the SCR system, and verify that all emissions components are functioning correctly before returning your vehicle.

Prevention Tips

AdBlue filler caps are typically blue and located separately from the diesel filler — often under the boot floor, next to the fuel filler, or under the bonnet. Familiarise yourself with their locations on your vehicle. If you use a funnel to add AdBlue, dedicate it solely to that purpose — even traces of other fluids can cause problems. And always source your AdBlue from a reputable supplier to ensure it meets the required ISO 22241 specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

I put AdBlue in my diesel tank — how serious is it?+
Very serious if the engine is started. AdBlue is corrosive to diesel fuel system components and can cause thousands in damage. If you haven't started the engine, call us immediately — a prompt drain and flush can usually prevent any permanent damage.
Can I drive with diesel in my AdBlue tank?+
The engine will continue to run on diesel, but the SCR emissions system will malfunction. You'll likely see warning lights and the vehicle may enter limp mode. Avoid driving further than necessary and have the AdBlue system drained and flushed as soon as possible to prevent damage to SCR components.
How much does AdBlue contamination repair cost?+
If caught early — before the engine is started — a drain and flush is often all that's needed. If the engine was run on contaminated fuel, the cost increases significantly due to potential injector, pump, or fuel rail damage. Our technician will assess the situation and provide a clear quote before proceeding.
Will my vehicle's emissions system work properly after repair?+
Yes. After a complete drain, flush, and system reset, your SCR system should function exactly as designed. We verify emissions system operation with diagnostic equipment before returning your vehicle and will advise if any components need further attention.
