What Is AdBlue / DEF?
AdBlue (known as DEF — Diesel Exhaust Fluid — in the US) is a urea-based solution used in modern diesel vehicles with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. It's injected into the exhaust to reduce harmful NOx emissions.
AdBlue has its own separate filler cap — usually blue — and should never be added to the diesel fuel tank. When it enters the fuel system, it crystallises and causes severe, often irreversible damage to high-pressure fuel components.
What Happens When AdBlue Enters Your Diesel Tank?
AdBlue is corrosive to metals and alloys used in diesel fuel systems. Once it mixes with diesel, it begins crystallising almost immediately — blocking filters, scoring injectors, and corroding the high-pressure fuel pump.
Signs of AdBlue Contamination:
- ✕Engine Warning Lights — Multiple dashboard warnings including check engine and SCR fault
- ✕Limp Mode — Vehicle drastically reduces power to protect itself
- ✕Engine Won't Start — Crystallised urea blocks fuel flow entirely
- ✕Rough Running / Misfires — Contaminated fuel doesn't combust properly
- ✕White Crystalline Residue — Visible deposits in the fuel system
Cost Implications
If caught before the engine is started, the repair is typically a tank drain and flush. If the engine has been run, you may be looking at replacement of the fuel pump, injectors, and fuel lines — potentially $5,000–$15,000+ in damage.
What We Do
All contaminated diesel + AdBlue removed
Lines, filters, and rail purged of crystallised residue
Clean diesel added to get you running again
Fast response across United States
Professional, insured technicians
We come to you — no towing needed in most cases
What To Do Right Now
- 1DO NOT start the engine
If the engine is running, turn it off immediately
- 2Leave the ignition off
Even turning the key to "on" can activate the fuel pump and circulate contaminated fuel
- 3Note how much AdBlue was added
This helps us assess the contamination severity
- 4Call Eek: (855) 414-4717
We'll be there within 45 minutes on average
Don't Wait — Every Minute Counts
AdBlue crystallises quickly. The sooner we drain it, the less damage is done.
